Welcome to Himeji, Japan

Himeji-jo Castle
Himeji-jo Castle

Himeji-jo's majestic castle is one of the few original buildings still standing in Japan. The castle, which is five stories high and overlooks intricate castle grounds and picturesque moats, is known as the "White Egret Castle" due to its striking white walls and magnificent shape. Three lesser holds, or tenshu in Japanese, encircle the main keep. They are all characterised by differently shaped holes where arrows and weapons were once discharged. On the wall of the main keep, there are also small gaps made expressly for the purpose of pouring boiling oil or water down the throats of anyone trying to scale the walls.

Although the site features fortifications dating back to 1333, the majority of what is visible today was constructed around 1580 and has subsequently served as the residence of 48 different lords. The castle complex was progressively expanded over the ages, and today it consists of more than eighty structures connected by a maze-like network of winding corridors and gates. Himeji-jo Castle was inscribed into the World Heritage List of UNESCO in 1993. The interior of the castle is filled with beautifully smooth, mostly barren wood flooring that gets smaller as you ascend through the main keep on narrow staircases. From the highest level, guests can take in breathtaking views of the defences that resemble a maze below.
