Day 2 - Khao Yai National Park

Bangkok - Khao Yai. Today's adventure starts as you depart from Bangkok, and head towards the central Thai province of Saraburi, renowned for its captivating ancient Buddhist temples.

Your first stop will be at Phra Buddha Badh, a sacred site home to a shrine dedicated to the revered footprint of Buddha. The temple compound is surrounded by a number of magnificent temples for you to explore.

After lunch, you will continue to Khao Yai National Park. This expansive park boasts over 50 kilometers of hiking and biking trails, along with a collection of breathtaking waterfalls including the iconic 20-meter-tall Haew Suwat featured in the Hollywood hit 'The Beach' directed by Danny Boyle.

The park is also a sanctuary for diverse flora and fauna. Keep your eyes peeled for sightings of bears, gibbons, elephants, and hornbills as you explore the natural wonderland.

As your adventure unfolds, you'll make two stops. Firstly, you'll visit the hillside sanctuary of Wat Theppithak, adorned with an imposing seated Buddha statue. Later, at Klang Dong, you'll experience a local fruit market.

Venturing further, you'll arrive at Wat Sala Loi, a serene temple whose main chapel takes the shape of a Chinese junk ship, constructed using local materials like famous earthen tiles from Daan Kwein.

After lunch at a local restaurant in Korat, you will continue to Pimai. Here, explore the captivating museum and the magnificent Khmer temples, often referred to as the Angkor Wat of Thailand, believed to have been built by King Jayavaramen VI in the 11th century.

The last stop for today will be Sai Ngam Banyan Grove, home to Thailand's largest banyan tree. Nestled on its own island within a pond, this area holds sacred significance as the banyan tree symbolizes deep spiritual meaning in Buddhism.

You will continue on to Prasat Phnom Rung, the most important Khmer temple complex in Thailand. Perched atop a small hill, the complex comprises of a stunning monumental staircase and a sanctuary.

Your day continues with a visit to another Khmer temple, Prasat Muang Tham, which predates Prasat Phnom Rung. Here, marvel at a collection of well-preserved bas reliefs.

After lunch, your path takes you to the northeast province of Surin. Here, explore the captivating Prasat Hin Sikhoraphum, another gem of Khmer architecture. Originally a Hindu temple dedicated to the deity Shiva, this site is renowned for its five prangs—Khmer-style towers.

Next on the agenda is Prasat Wat Sa Kamphaeng Noi, where a laterite stupa and a charming chapel adorned with a lotus pond at its front await. Continuing your voyage, you'll drive to Ubon Ratchathani, one of Isan's major cities.

After lunch, continue to Ban Pa Ao, a village in Ubon Ratchathani with roots tracing back to migrants from Vientiane, Laos, during the reign of King Sri Bun San. Here, skilled artisans craft bronzeware and intricate handwoven silk.

Your final destination is the Ban Kan Lueang archaeological site, where an excavation in 1992 unveiled an array of artifacts that date back an astonishing 2,000 years.
