Africa Lodge & Accommodated Safaris & Tours

Our Accommodated & Lodge Safaris

We offer a broad range of accommodated tours in Africa, for those who don’t want to camp. The standard of the properties we use on these tours ranges from ‘simple’ accommodation on our Overland Safaris and ‘standard’ on our Accommodated Safaris, to a wonderful selection of ‘mid-range’ properties on our Lodge Safaris.

Whichever tour you choose, you will still enjoy incredible wildlife-spotting opportunities, guided sightseeing and an authentic African experience.

Lodge Safaris

The Lodge Safaris offer our highest standard of accommodation and we stay at a wonderful range of mid-range (3-4 star) lodges, permanent tented camps and boutique hotels. The accommodation we use can be found on the tour pages. In Southern Africa our lodge accommodated safaris have a maximum group size of 16 and you’ll be travelling in a either a Sprinter minibus or a custom-built 16 or 20-seater overland truck. In East Africa the maximum group size is seven and you’ll be travelling in a 4x4 landcruiser. All of the tours are accompanied by an experienced guide, who is also the driver and included meals are served at the lodges. Families with children aged 10 and over are welcome on these safaris. For more information please visit our About Lodge Safaris page.

Accommodated Safaris

Our Accommodated Safaris have a maximum group size of 12 and travel in a safari minivan or custom-built vehicle. The tours are a step up from our Overland Safaris and stay in a comfortable selection of standard lodges, chalets and tented camps. All accommodation is en suite and many of the properties have a swimming pool and a bar. Accommodation that we commonly use is displayed on the tour page. You’ll be escorted by a guide who is also your driver and meals are provided at the accommodation.

Families are welcome on our Accommodated Safaris, which have a minimum child age of 8. These safaris are also great for solo travellers as there’s no compulsory single supplements so if you’re happy to share a room we can match you up.

Overland Adventure Safaris

Our Overland Safaris offer a choice of camping or simple accommodation. These safaris travel in a 28-seater overland truck, escorted by a safari crew of two and the maximum group size is 16. If you book one of our accommodated Overland Safaris, it is important to note that many of the travellers in the group will be camping. We use campsites which also have simple accommodation on site. All meals are prepared by the crew and the group pitches in with cooking and camp chores.

The minimum age on our Overland Safaris is 18 and they are perfect for the young or young at heart, with a maximum age of 75. These trips are also ideal for solo travellers who are happy to share a room and don’t want to pay a single supplement.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a local payment and what is it for?

Many of our tours require a local payment to be paid in cash when you arrive in Africa. This payment covers selected park entrance fees, activities and excursions along the way, and the payment goes entirely to local suppliers. Please note that the local payments are subject to change due to changing park fees and activity costs which are beyond our control. The detail and cost of the local payment for each tour can be found on the relevant tour page.

The Best of African Wildlife

Whichever African safari or tour you choose, you will embark on game drives in some of the continent's most iconic national parks. From the sprawling grasslands of the Serengeti to the dusty plains of Etosha and the waterways of the Okavango Delta. These are some of the species to look out for on safari, including all of the majestic Big Five.

Lion

The only social member of the big cat family, living in hierarchical prides of up to 15 or even more animals, lions can be spotted throughout Africa's national parks. Chobe in Botswana and Hwange in Zimbabwe are great places to spot lions on safari.

Elephant

The world's largest land mammal can be found in more than 30 countries across Africa. Find them drinking at watering holes, the locations of which are passed down the generations by matriarchs. Chobe, Kruger in South Africa and South Luangwa in Zambia have good elephant populations.

Rhino

Both black and white rhinos are endangered, with black rhinos critically so. Conservation efforts using the money brought in from tourism are so important in protecting these iconic creatures. South Africa's Kruger National Park has by far the largest rhino population in Africa, and Namibia's Etosha is a stronghold for black rhinos too.

Leopard

Leopards are the most elusive member of the Big Five, well camouflaged against the African bush and preferring to come out at night to hunt. Count yourself lucky if you spot one of these beautiful cats. South Luangwa in Zambia and Moremi in Botswana have some of the highest densities, giving you the best chance to see them!

Buffalo

The armoured tank of the animal kingdom, even lions will think twice before tackling a buffalo. Found in huge numbers across the continent, it is likely to be the first Big Five species you see on safari. The Serengeti is an iconic heartland for this bad-tempered herbivore.

Giraffe

The tallest animal on the planet, the gentle giraffe is surprisingly rare but easy to spot thanks to its height. You can spot them roaming the grassy plains of east and southern Africa, with the Serengeti, Masai Mara and Etosha being particular hotspots.
