Tanzania overland camping & accommodated safaris
Our escorted overland camping safaris in Tanzania take in all the country's main highlights, from the Serengeti to Zanzibar and the Ngorongoro Crater. You will also see the best of neighbouring countries in East Africa, and even down south: from Kenya, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe to South Africa. Travelling cross country in a rugged overland truck, you'll be escorted in Tanzania by a two or three-person crew, and everyone will pitch in with cooking and setting up camp. You'll sleep in twin tents under the stars, surrounded by the sounds of the African bush. Or you can upgrade, with an Accommodated version of some tours staying in simple chalet accommodation instead. If you would like more information about our Tanzania camping trips, don't hesitate to contact our team.
Tanzania lodge safaris
If camping isn't quite right for your Tanzania tour and you're after something a bit more luxury, then you may want to consider our lodge safaris. These small group tours stay in a range of comfortable lodges, permanent tented camps, and chalets, and the majority of your meals are included - no cooking for you on these trips! Our lodge safaris are fully escorted by a professional guide, with plenty of included game drives in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tanzania's other game reserves.
Tanzania private safari tours
These private safaris are ideal if you would prefer to travel to Tanzania with just your friends and family, rather than a group. These Tanzania tours can be booked off the shelf, and they still take in all the main highlights of the country, from the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater to the beaches of Zanzibar. You can also choose from a range of accommodation options to suit your preferences and budget. Our team is on hand to help with anything you may need to plan your dream Tanzania safari.

The Best of African Wildlife
Whichever African safari or tour you choose, you will embark on game drives in some of the continent's most iconic national parks. From the sprawling grasslands of the Serengeti to the dusty plains of Etosha and the waterways of the Okavango Delta. These are some of the species to look out for on safari, including all of the majestic Big Five.
Lion
The only social member of the big cat family, living in hierarchical prides of up to 15 or even more animals, lions can be spotted throughout Africa's national parks. Chobe in Botswana and Hwange in Zimbabwe are great places to spot lions on safari.
Elephant
The world's largest land mammal can be found in more than 30 countries across Africa. Find them drinking at watering holes, the locations of which are passed down the generations by matriarchs. Chobe, Kruger in South Africa and South Luangwa in Zambia have good elephant populations.
Rhino
Both black and white rhinos are endangered, with black rhinos critically so. Conservation efforts using the money brought in from tourism are so important in protecting these iconic creatures. South Africa's Kruger National Park has by far the largest rhino population in Africa, and Namibia's Etosha is a stronghold for black rhinos too.
Leopard
Leopards are the most elusive member of the Big Five, well camouflaged against the African bush and preferring to come out at night to hunt. Count yourself lucky if you spot one of these beautiful cats. South Luangwa in Zambia and Moremi in Botswana have some of the highest densities, giving you the best chance to see them!
Buffalo
The armoured tank of the animal kingdom, even lions will think twice before tackling a buffalo. Found in huge numbers across the continent, it is likely to be the first Big Five species you see on safari. The Serengeti is an iconic heartland for this bad-tempered herbivore.
Giraffe
The tallest animal on the planet, the gentle giraffe is surprisingly rare but easy to spot thanks to its height. You can spot them roaming the grassy plains of east and southern Africa, with the Serengeti, Masai Mara and Etosha being particular hotspots.
Frequently asked questions
Will I explore the Serengeti National Park on your Tanzania trips?
The Serengeti National Park is Tanzania's premier wildlife destination, forming part of the giant Serengeti ecosystem with neighbouring Kenya. It's home to all of the Big Five (lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalo) and countless other native species. The vast majority of our Tanzania trips explore the reserve, alongside the UNESCO-listed Ngorongoro Crater. Some of our trips also travel to Tarangire National Park and Mikumi National Park.
What other national parks will I visit in Tanzania?
We know that the majority of travellers come to Tanzania for the wildlife, which is why we take in many of the country's best national parks and game reserves on safari across our trips. As well as the Serengeti National Park, travellers on our overland camping safaris in Tanzania will visit the Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa's finest safari destinations. And with our lodge safaris, you can also visit Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara National Park. Remember, that with our overland camping safaris, you can visit multiple countries across eastern and southern Africa. So from Tanzania, you could visit the wildlife reserves like Chobe in Botswana, or Etosha in Namibia, the choice is yours! If there is somewhere in particular that you would like to visit on your Tanzania safari then don't hesitate to reach out to our Reservations team, who can help you to find the perfect trip!
Will I see the Big Five on your Tanzania tours and safaris?
The Big Five are the five African species most sought after by travellers on a Tanzania safari. They are African lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalo. We give our travellers the best chance possible to spot the Big Five on their Tanzania tour, with numerous included game drives in the country's main national parks and reserves. All of the Big Five reside in the Serengeti National Park. The Ngorongoro Crater is home to some of the highest densities of African wildlife on the continent, and Lake Manyara is home to the famous tree-climbing lions. Of course no wildlife encounters can be guaranteed, as wild animals are unpredictable. Leopards in particular are hard to spot, because they are well camouflaged and mostly nocturnal. But you are sure to see some incredible wildlife, and you never know, you may be able to tick off all five on your Tanzania tour!
When is the best time to go to Tanzania?
Although Tanzania is a year-round destination, the dry season from June / July - October is generally considered the best time to visit, with less vegetation and fewer water sources causing wildlife to congregate around the surviving drinking spots.
What do I need to pack for my camping safari to East Africa?
If travelling on one of our camping trips, we recommend you read our guide to overland camping safaris. You can also see a detailed packing list in the Trip Notes for each tour. Some of the important items to remember are: sleeping bag, travel pillow, towel, Mosquito spray (with active DEET ingredient), your own personal first aid kit, torch, antibacterial wipes, a photocopy of your passport data, and your Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate.
What is the local payment for on your camping safaris?
The local payment is a cost per person that needs to be paid in US Dollars cash only. It is this payment that in part covers the park fees and other inclusions such as meals as detailed on each tour page. The local payment also covers your arrival transfer and first night’s accommodation. Please note that due to exchange rate fluctuations in the US dollar, the local payment amount may be subject to changes. This payment will be collected by your tour leader at the Welcome Meeting on day 1 of your escorted tour. Our Reservations team can give you more information about the local payment, the cost of which can be found on each tour page.
How big are the groups on your Tanzania tours?

On our lodge accommodated tours, you will be fully escorted by an experienced local guide, who will also act as your driver.
Is Tanzania a safe destination for travellers from the LGBTQ+ community?
According to the 2023 LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index, Tanzania scores an F rating for LGBTQ+ traveller safety, ranking 185th out of 203 countries. Same sex marriage is illegal and there are no constitutional or worker protections in place for the LGBTQ+ community, although there is limited criminalization of violence against LGBTQ+ individuals. 0 - 25% of consulted citizens consider Tanzania a good place to live for gay and lesbian people. Any acts of homosexuality are liable to imprisonment from 30 years to life, and indecent behavior in regard to homosexuality earns up to 5 years in prison. This does not mean members of the LGBTQ+ community shouldn’t visit Tanzania, but precautions should be taken when travelling. As long as you use common sense, travelling in Tanzania shouldn’t be a problem. The LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index is designed to provide a good overall picture of attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community in each country and may not reflect the experience of foreign travellers to the country.
Is the tap water safe to drink?
The tap water in Tanzania is not considered safe to drink. You should stick to filtered and bottled water, which is readily available in shops, hotels, and restaurants throughout the country.
I heard that there is a strict plastic bag ban in Tanzania?
You heard correct. Single use plastic bags were banned in Tanzania in 2019, to help reduce pollution and conserve Tanzania's incredible environment. Passengers arriving at any airport can face on-the-spot fines for bringing plastic bags into the country. This includes plastic bags in both your checked luggage and carry-on luggage, as well as duty-free plastic bags. We strongly recommend avoiding packing any plastic bags in your luggage before you travel to Tanzania. You should also remove any items purchased at departure airports from your bags before boarding. Double check your luggage before disembarking in Tanzania and leave any plastic bags on the plane. There is an exemption for ziplock bags used to carry liquids for travelling, though you must make sure not to discard these in Tanzania.
As a solo traveller will I have to pay more to travel to Tanzania?
On our overland camping tours, solo travellers will be matched up with another solo traveller of the same sex, with whom they will share a tent. If there is no other solo traveller of the same sex on the tour, you will have a tent to yourself at no extra cost. On our Handpicked lodge tours, a single supplement applies for solo travellers. The cost of this can be seen on the tour page for each trip.
