Tiananmen Square
This morning, we embark on a guided sightseeing tour of the nation’s capital - host of the 2008 Olympics. Tiananmen Square, partly framed by illustrious Chang-an Avenue, is essentially the heart of Beijing. A patriotic vision of grandeur, Tiananmen Square is a square for the public and also home to the mausoleum of Chairman Mao and the striking Monument to the People’s Heroes. Probably one of Beijing’s most famous sights is the Gate of Heavenly Peace. Up above the gate and looking out across to all his people, is Chairman Mao. Heading back a few centuries, we step into the Forbidden City, the walled city of the former Chinese emperors. Entry was forbidden to all but those on imperial business until 1911, when the last emperor, Puyi, was overthrown.
This afternoon we take rickshaws to explore the Hutongs of Beijing. As our trusty rickshaw driver peddles us through the network of alleys, old back lanes, traditional courtyards and compact houses, it gives us a fascinating snapshot of the city’s traditional way of life. There is time to meet a local family and take a peek inside their home, before returning to our hotel.
This evening, we enjoy an eye boggling Chinese acrobatic performance. Swinging ropes, juggling hoops, spinning plates and human pyramids are just a few tricks these show stoppers pull out followed by a Welcome Dinner of Peking Duck.

The Great Wall
After a free morning to further explore the city, we drive beyond Beijing to Badaling, to walk a section of the famous Great Wall. Built in the Ming Dynasty, a 6m wide pathway makes a formidable defence, following the highest contours of a steep range of hills. We also visit a Jade Carving Centre before heading to our quaint hotel near Juyongguan Pass, which offers views of the Great Wall.

Morning at the Great Wall
Beijing - Luoyang. We rise early this morning and head (5 min bus drive) to the Great Wall at Juyongguan Pass when it opens to beat the crowds. Later we return to Beijing to explore the famous Pearl markets - an Aladdin's Cave of clothing, jewellery and electronic gadgets before taking an afternoon bullet train to Luoyang. Reaching speeds of up to 305km per hour the journey is an experience in itself! Check in to hotel in Luoyang, late evening.

Shaolin Kung Fu Temple
First thing today we drive to the Shaolin Kung Fu Temple (approx 2 hours), set on the foothills of the Songshan Mountain. Here generation after generation of Shaolin monks have devoted themselves to practising Chan Buddhism and a martial art widely recognised as the origins of kung fu. Over the years hundreds, if not thousands, of people have flocked to this very site to learn this ancient discipline and we'll have the opportunity to watch a performance of kung fu during our visit. Returning to Luoyang you’ll have some free time, and the option to walk to Xiyuan Park where ball room dancing, tai chi, aerobics and badminton lessons take place every evening.

UNESCO-listed Longmen Caves
Luoyang - Xi’an. Today we explore the UNESCO-listed 5th and 6th Century Longmen Caves etched into the cliffs of the Yi River. The 2,300 caves (grottoes) are adorned with 110,000 statues and images of Buddha carved during the Northern Wei Dynasty. This afternoon we board the high speed train to Xi’an (journey time approx 2hrs). After hotel check-in and some time to fresh up we’ll embark on a casual bike ride around the Xi’an City Wall. Looking down as you peddle offers delightful views of the city hubbub and daily life with the Old City in the centre of the walls and the modern city on the outside.

Terracotta Warriors
Renowned for its noodles, Xi’an in Shaanxi Province is perhaps most famous for the discovery of Emperor Qin’s Terracotta Warriors. Discovered in 1974 by local farmers digging a well, the 2,200 year old terracotta warriors comprise more than 7,000 life-sized soldiers which stand battle-ready in excavated pits under the cover of a modern protective hanger. Made of local clay, each is said to be an individual portrait. We tour the Terracotta Warrior site and a workshop where replicas are crafted.
Tonight, we welcome you to join the optional Tang Dynasty Show, which includes dinner, a traditional performance and transfers (bookable locally).

Big Wild Goose Pagoda
Xi’an - Shanghai. Today we visit the Wild Goose Pagoda followed by the Grand Mosque and Muslim Quarter of Xi'an. We then enjoy a delicious hot pot lunch before boarding our express train destined for sizzling Shanghai, with arrival late this evening.

Shanghai city tour
Focus your eyes on spectacular Shanghai. Perhaps China’s most modern city, its amazing Pudong skyline is stunning. We enjoy a tour of the many city sights including Yuyuan Garden and The Bund, with a cruise on the Huangpu River.

Suzhou Water canals
Today we travel by road to ancient Suzhou. A sort of oriental Venice, ancient Suzhou is interwoven by a series of canals and pretty waterways which feed a series of classical gardens, laid out here since the Song dynasty a thousand years ago, they are justly famous across China.
Suzhou sits very close to the Grand Canal, here we enjoy a cruise on the Grand Canal before exploring the Lingering Garden - a beautiful classical Chinese garden dating back from the Ming Dynasty. Today’s final visit is a silk workshop before returning to Shanghai. Day 11 offers the opportunity to head out and discover Shanghai - your way.

Fly to Hong Kong
Shanghai - Kowloon/Hong Kong. Early this morning we fly to the bustling island territory of Hong Kong. Upon arrival your will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel in Kowloon. You'll have a full free day to explore.
Hong Kong, with its remnants of the colonial era plus its Chinese heritage, is a fascinating, lively city. The development of Hong Kong really began with the British traders arrival, the Opium Wars and the signing of Nanking Treaty, which gave Hong Kong to the British in 1842. The Sino-British Joint Declaration paved the way for Britain to hand back sovereignty of the territory including Kowloon, in return for Hong Kong maintaining its existing economic system for fifty years. The hand over proved to be smooth and the city today is alive, booming economically and great for shopping.
Night markets, temples and the 260 surrounding islands offer a tranquil respite from the hustle and bustle of downtown Hong Kong, museums, horseracing and the views from Victoria Peak all make Hong Kong an exciting destination. You could also opt for a Chinese adventures with a sampan (junk) boat ride around Aberdeen’s harbour and a seafood dish in one of the famed restaurants by the water front.

The Nathan is a stylish hotel with good sized, comfortable rooms that come fully-equipped with modern amenities. The complex also houses a state of the art gym, where guests can work up a sweat before they feast on the treats on offer in the restaurants. The hotel is in a central location in Kowloon, 1km from the railway station and 30km from the airport.
Having travelled quite extensively, this was my first time of being on a tour. We were meet by Lisa who extended a warm and friendly welcome to Beijing. Lisa kindly took matters into her own hands to reunite me with my delayed luggage, allowing me go ahead to the hotel. It arrived with Lisa later that night after midnight who made it appear to be no bother at all after what was a long day for her. Very impressed. The tour itself was well organised and structured with a few minor amendments to the itinerary which we were notified of beforehand. There was enough time spent in each city to get an overview of the place. The tour gave so many great experiences and exposure to a side China that was more than I imagined. The highlight for me was The Great Wall - so majestic. Right now I'm still trying to take it all in. My only moan would be that on a few occasions there was not enough time for photo opportunities as we had to be moving very quickly - understandable as time was of the essence. That said, it was one of my best travel experiences and one that I won't forget having been accompanied by a very friendly & fun group and a fantastic tour guide. Lisa is a genuine credit to your company and a nice person too. Nothing was ever too much for Lisa to assist with and was very patient too. Hopefully on my next tour I'll meet someone just as nice and helpful as Lisa.”
