Trips and Tours to Arenal Volcano National Park
About Arenal Volcano National Park
As one of the most active volcanoes in the whole of the Americas, the 1,633 meter-tall Arenal Volcano forms the centerpiece of the Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal. Perfectly conical in shape with a crater measuring 140 meters across, Arenal is an unavoidable presence looming above the eastern end of Laguna de Arenal. Occasionally obscured by clouds, at the very least visitors will hear the volcano with its unearthly rumblings and at night its presence may even be felt with sporadic ground vibrations.
Read MoreThe national park contains a number of good walking trails that pass through secondary forest and lava fields created by previous eruptions. Easily accessed from the park entrance, these trails may also present wildlife spotting opportunities with birds such as parrots a particularly common feature along many of the routes. For those looking for something more challenging, the Arenal 1968 trail is a 3km loop that takes hikers to the original lava flow.
Arenal was Costa Rica's most active volcano up until 2010 when it entered into an indeterminate resting phase. Fiery explosions and red hot lava flows are not as common as they once were but nevertheless the volcano is still a spectacular sight and a popular inclusion on any Costa Rica itinerary. Outdoor activities abound in the area around Arenal from leisurely pursuits such as bathing in local hot springs to more adventurous excursions including zip-line tours, canyoning, horse riding and white water rafting.
