Trips and Tours to Tortuguero National Park
About Tortuguero National Park
Extending along a 22km stretch of coast besides the Caribbean Sea and backed by low-lying volcanic hills, Parque Nacional Tortuguero is one of the most visited national parks in Costa Rica. Spanish for 'turtle-catcher', Tortuguero is best known as being one of the most important green sea turtle nesting sites in the world. Between the months of March - May and July - October, dozens of turtles (green, hawksbill and leatherback) emerge from the sea and make their egg-nests in the sand. Nightly turtle tours are led by certified guides enabling visitors to watch the surreal march of nesting turtles from a safe distance.
Read MoreEncompassing a range of ecological systems from tropical rainforest to coastal mangrove swamps, Tortuguero National Park has even more to offer. A seemingly endless expanse of beach fronts the sea with numerous rivers, canals and waterways leading inland, making travel by boat one of the better ways to explore the park. Boat tours offer the best wildlife-spotting opportunities including howler monkeys, crocodiles and an abundance of birds, and you might be lucky enough to spot the endangered West Indian Manatee swimming in the waters. Canoe trips are another popular way of getting around and can be organized very easily. The park's remote location means that it is only accessible by air or by boat.
